What a web designer should know about New Minden
In New Minden, 6.8% of workers walk to their jobs, far above most of the state. In a dense, walkable place, location and hours matter as much as price. Hours have to be right, because people walk over after checking them.
New Minden’s small businesses and what their websites need
New Minden shares ZIP code 62263 with the surrounding area, where 200 employer businesses were counted in 2023. A sample of that count, and what each kind of business needs online:
- Grocery stores (3): store hours, departments and weekly specials you post by email to us.
- Chiropractic offices (3): what a first visit looks like, your hours, the insurance you accept and a way to request an appointment.
- Insurance agencies (5): the lines of insurance you write, the carriers you represent and a quote form.
- Auto repair shops (3): certifications, warranty terms in plain words and a contact form for estimates.
- Child care centers (3): the program, licensing information, the staff and a contact form for parents.
Washington County as a whole had 364 employer establishments in 2023 and another 872 nonemployer businesses, the one-person shops and independent contractors that often have no website at all. Washington County has 4.2 times the national share of nondurable goods wholesalers: 22 of them in the 2023 count. In that line of work, restaurants, shops and institutions order by catalog, so the website should show the catalog, delivery routes and how to become a customer. Every one of them is a search away from a customer in New Minden.

Paperwork and rules for Illinois businesses online
These are some of the Illinois and federal rules a small business with a website runs into:
- Illinois has no statewide general business license; cities and counties impose their own taxes and may require zoning permits, so the city or county clerk is the place to check. In New Minden, that means asking Washington County and the Village of New Minden. Official source
- Illinois splits the DBA filing: a sole proprietorship or general partnership registers the assumed business name with the county clerk, while a corporation, LLC or LLP registers an assumed name with the Secretary of State. Assumed Business Name Act, 805 ILCS 405
- Illinois taxes general merchandise at a 6.25% state Retailers’ Occupation Tax rate, with a preferential 1% rate on qualifying drugs and medical appliances; municipalities and counties add local rates. Illinois Department of Revenue
Each business is different; this is general information, not legal advice.
