Minnesota rules for a business with a website

  • A business trading under a name that does not set out the true name of every owner files a certificate of assumed name with the Minnesota Secretary of State. Minnesota also requires the certificate to be published in a qualified newspaper in the county of the principal office for two successive issues. Minn. Stat. 333.01
  • Minnesota’s state sales tax is 6.875%: a 6.5% general rate plus the 0.375% increase required by the Minnesota Constitution. Cities, counties and special districts add local sales taxes on top of it. Minnesota Department of Revenue
  • A business that conducts business in Minnesota and owns or licenses data with personal information must disclose a breach of the security of the system to any Minnesota resident whose unencrypted personal information was, or is reasonably believed to have been, acquired by an unauthorized person, in the most expedient time possible and without unreasonable delay. Minn. Stat. 325E.61
